Russell Simmons makes an interesting point in his book Life and Def
about racism not being perhaps legitimate hate towards people from
different backgrounds but simply a lack of cultural understandings...
He cites stories from his frequent trips to academy awards and the islands to do business with white label execs. At one point black people were outside boycotting awards which he was attending, because they felt minorities were not well represented in the culture...Whoopi Goldberg
was Hosting the show and a couple of black actors were slated to receive the awards...In another story he cites meeting with many white people who didnt know very much about rap or urban culture and as their understanding grew of the culture so did the respect of the people he did business with, white or black..its all about taking time to get to know your podner....
